ComedyTab is a browser extension that offers to provide users with a small amount of comedy right there in their Web browser. More specifically, the application will display a joke from a famous comedian on the homepage of the user's browsers. However, what many users may not realize before having already installed the application, is that ComedyTab also possesses browser-hijacker capabilities.
Indeed, in addition to the promised jokes, the extension will modify several, important browser settings. Most browser hijackers affect the homepage, new tab page, and the default search engine of the affected browsers. The goal of the intrusive application is to then promote and generate artificial traffic towards a sponsored address, which in the vast majority of cases belongs to a fake search engine. ComedyTab follows most of that established behavior. It will modify the same browser settings, but instead of a fake or dubious search engine, it will set them to open the legitimate Bing search engine. If users initiate a search query by directly clicking on the search icon found on ComedyTab's page, they will instead be taken to the find.wsrc-now.com page.
Although ComedyTab has its own official page, infosec researchers also have observed it being spread via questionable and deceptive websites. Using such underhanded distribution methods classifies the application as a PUP (Potentially Unwanted Program). Users should keep in mind that most PUPs have additional, invasive capabilities, such as data tracking. While installed on the device, these applications may monitor the users' browsing activities, collect device details, or extract sensitive information (account credentials, payment details, banking info, etc.) from browsers' autofill data.
