Threat Database Ransomware Coinlocker Ransomware

Coinlocker Ransomware

A ransomware threat, Coinlocker, is designed to target the data of its victims and lock it using an uncrackable cryptographic algorithm. The threat can affect documents, archives, databases, images, photos and many other file types. Due to the encryption process, each file will no longer be usable and accessible. Furthermore, Coinlocker will add '.exe' to the names of the files it targets as a new extension. Keep in mind that although identical in appearance, this is not the same '.exe' extension as the Windows executable file format. Victims also will notice the appearance of an unfamiliar text document on the desktop of the breached device. The file is named 'bitdecrypter.txt' and contains a ransom note with instructions.

According to the message left by the threat actors, the locked files can be restored with their help. However, like most ransomware operations, they demand to be paid a hefty ransom to send a decryptor software to their victims. The size of the ransom mentioned in the note is 100 BTC (Bitcoin). Even though the bitcoin cryptocurrency lost a significant portion of its value, the sum demanded by the attackers is still equal to an exorbitant $3 million. Such an amount is not something that individual victims would be capable of paying, which could mean that Coinlocker Ransomware's main targets are corporate entities. The ransom note contains a single email address 'dog12353@yahoo.com' that could be used to contact the attackers.
