Cceo Ransomware

The Cceo Ransomware is a variant from the infamous STOP/Djvu family. Although it lacks any major distinguishing features that set it apart from the other variants of the STOP/Djvu Ransomware family, Cceo's destructive capabilities should not be underestimated. The threat targets a sizeable range of different file types and encrypts them with a strong cryptographic algorithm. Restoration of the affected documents, photos, PDFs, databases, archives, audio and video files, etc. without having the proper decryption keys, is practically impossible.

Each encrypted file will have '.cceo' added to its original name as a new extension. The ransomware threat also will create a new text file on the infected systems. Named '_readme.txt,' the role of the file is to deliver a ransom note with instructions to the threat's victims.

Reading the message reveals that the operators of the threat are trying to extort the sum of $980 from their victims. However, affected users who contact the attackers within the first 72 hours will supposedly only have to pay half of that amount. The ransom note mentions two email addresses that users can message - 'support@bestyourmail.ch' and 'datarestorehelp@airmail.cc.' The cybercriminals apparently allow for a single encrypted file to be attached to the initial message. Afterward, the hackers will try to unlock and return it to the victim for free as a demonstration that they can restore all encrypted data.

Of course, this may not always be the case and some files could remain permanently damaged. The hackers also may simply take the money and run away. There is also a significant possibility that users who establish communication with cybercriminals risk facing additional security or privacy issues.
