Threat Database Ransomware Bitenc Ransomware

Bitenc Ransomware

Bitenc is ransomware that encrypts data and demands payment for the decryption tools. Upon execution, the Bitenc Ransomware begins to encrypt files on the system and appends their filenames with a '.bitenc' extension. For example, a file initially titled '1.png' would be changed to '1.png.bitenc,' '2.png' to '2.png.bitenc' and so on for all affected files. After encryption is complete, a ransom message – 'FILE RECOVERY.txt' – is dropped onto the device's desktop. Cybersecurity experts have confirmed that the Bitenc Ransomware is a variant of the Mallox Ransomware family.

Bitenc Ransomware's Demands

The Bitenc Ransomware encrypts the files on a victim's computer and renders them inaccessible. Victims are then presented with a ransom note asking for payment in exchange for the decryption key or software needed to restore their files. The attackers also offer a free decryption test on one file as proof of their ability to decrypt the data and warn that attempting to manually decode the files can render them undecryptable and thus unrecoverable.

The ransom note also includes links to a blog, where the attackers have posted data collected from previously attacked companies, indicating that the Bitenc Ransomware targets larger entities rather than home users. Unfortunately, even if victims pay the ransom, there is no guarantee they will receive the promised decryption keys or software. Therefore, it is strongly recommended against spending any money, as this would only serve to support illegal activity.

Protect Your Data from the Bitenc Ransomware Attacks

As the popularity of ransomware grows, so do the different methods cybercriminals use to deliver this threatening software. Protecting your computer from ransomware attacks is vital, as cybercriminals are always looking for ways to exploit vulnerable victims.

Backing up basic data regularly is one of the best ways to protect yourself from ransomware attacks. It allows victims to restore lost data if something happens to it due to a ransomware attack. Use external hard drives or an online Cloud storage service to create multiple backups.

It's also extremely important to keep your operating system and security software up-to-date. Install the latest available updates because most new releases include patches for discovered security vulnerabilities that could otherwise be exploited by cybercriminals.

Having anti-malware software installed on your computer is a very effective way to protect yourself against ransomware. Security solutions should be used to scan your files regularly and alert you if any suspicious behavior is detected. If a ransomware attack is spotted early enough, the anti-malware tool may be able to remove or quarantine it before it has managed to impact the system.
