BestSportSearch tries to appeal to users who wish to get timely updates about their favorite sports matches. Unfortunately, analysis of this browser extension has revealed that its main purpose is to act as a browser hijacker, to promote a fake search engine. Users that allow the application to be installed on their computers will notice its immediate effect on the behavior of their Web browsers.
Indeed, BestSportSearch will modify several important browser settings, including the homepage, new tab page and the default search engine. All targeted settings will be modified to now open the promoted bestsportsearch.com address. It belongs to a fake search engine that is incapable of producing legitimate and unique results on its own.
Instead, the users' search queries will be redirected to other sources, such as the legitimate Yahoo search engine or the dubious one associated with nearbyme.io. Results taken from dubious and unproven sources oftentimes contain numerous sponsored advertisements that may not even fit the terms of the search.
However, more importantly, intrusive PUPs (Potentially Unwanted Programs) with browser hijacker or adware functionalities also are notorious for having data-tracking capabilities. The operators of such applications may try to obtain users' browsing data, numerous device details, or even details taken from the browser's autofill information. This data usually includes account credentials or other sensitive details, such as banking information or credit/debit card numbers.
