Best-converter is a piece of software that has the qualities of a browser hijacker. Typically, it installs as a rogue browser extension, and its purpose is to promote the fake search engine best-converter.com. Browser hijackers are classified as PUAs (Potentially Unwanted Applications) due to their misleading means of distribution and their unsafe features. These applications usually spread through the so-called "bundling" marketing tactic - packing regular programs with certain "undesired" supplements.
Once installed on a computer, Best-converter assigns best-converter.com as the new browsers' homepage, new tab/window and default search engine URLs. Therefore, each time users open a new tab/window on the affected browser and conduct Web searches through its address bar, they get redirected to the URL best-converter.com.
Like most fake search engines, best-converter.com displays some search results by redirecting the search to genuine search engines like Yahoo (search.yahoo.com). In other cases, Best-converter conducts the searches through another illegitimate search engine named searchlee.com. Anyway, provided search results are mostly inaccurate and may even endorse potentially dubious or unsafe content.
Browser hijackers also tend to implement persistence-ensuring techniques to prevent victims from recovering their browsers. An additional unsafe feature is the ability to track data, including visited URLs, search history, personally identifiable details, financial details and so on. The collected sensitive information is then sold to third parties for a profit. To summarize, browser hijackers can lead to severe privacy issues and even identity theft; therefore, users should remove them as soon as they are detected.
