The Ahoy Traveler browser extension is promoted on Ahoytraveler.com as a tool that can help users plan their adventures in exotic places like Egypt, Sri Lanka, the Amazon River and Siberia. Web surfers may be interested in installing the Ahoy Traveler browser extension to see what wonders may the world offer them, but they might be surprised unpleasantly. The Ahoy Traveler browser extension is developed by Informer Technologies, Inc. and is distributed by Lamphouse Media, LLC—both of which are associated with the development of adware. Security researchers reveal that Ahoy Traveler is another version of the Travel Output adware and has one other variant that goes under the name of Travel Giga. The Ahoy Traveler adware might use DLL libraries to affect the behavior of browsers like Google Chrome, Opera, Internet Explorer, Yandex and Mozilla Firefox. The analysis of the code of Ahoy Traveler suggests that it might connect to the servers of advertisers and download promotional materials locally.
Additionally, the Ahoy Traveler adware may use ActionScript to show full-page ads and redirect users to video commercials on less-reputable e-commerce portals. The ads by Ahoy Traveler may appear over the native ads on Amazon, Wallmart and eBay, and feature links to untrusted online merchants. The Ahoy Traveler adware may use CSS-styles to embed surveys on your favorite sites and welcome you to answer a few questions to win a $200 voucher for stores that are part of the REWE Group. You might have trouble receiving the voucher because the adware developers behind the Ahoy Traveler extension are not affiliated with the REWE Group. Moreover, the Ahoy Traveler adware may show pop-up windows that promote riskware such as Skyrocket Player and Social Privacy DNS that might have a harmful effect on your system stability. Security researchers note that the Ahoy Traveler adware may make modifications to your Registry settings to hide and protect its files, which could make manual removal rather troublesome. A trustworthy anti-spyware solution can delete the binary associated with the Ahoy Traveler adware and advise you what programs may track your online behavior.
