Threat Database Ransomware Aeur Ransomware

Aeur Ransomware

The Aeur Ransomware is yet another threat spawned from the infamous and rather prolific STOP/Djvu Ransomware family. Ransomware creators are still churning out new variants from the STOP/Djvu malware family and infosec researchers are detecting new threats almost daily. The Aeur Ransomware doesn't exhibit any major distinguishing characteristics, apart from the extension it uses to mark all encrypted files - '.aeur.' Still, the threat is capable of wreaking havoc on compromised systems and shouldn't be underestimated. The files it locks via an uncrackable encryption process will be held as hostages, while the victims will be extorted for money. Detailed instructions will be provided inside a text file named '_readme.'

Aeur Ransomware's Demands

The text of the note is virtually identical to the one delivered by other STOP/Djvu variants. The hackers demand to receive the sum of $980 if they are to provide their victims with the decryption key and tool necessary for the restoration of the locked data. The usual offer to reduce the ransom by 50% down to $490 is also here. The only requirement is for the affected users to reach out and establish contact during the 72 hours following the ransomware infection. Two email addresses - 'manager@mailtemp.ch' and 'managerhelper@airmail.cc,' can be used as communication channels. Victims can attach a single encrypted file to their messages. The hackers would then try to decrypt it and send it back unlocked as a demonstration of their ability to restore the affected data.

Still, it is not a good idea to trust the people responsible for unleashing ransomware attacks. Instead of potentially exposing yourself to more security risks, look for a suitable backup that can be used to restore the encrypted file. There are two extremely important steps that must be taken beforehand, though. First, clean the compromised system with a professional anti-malware product. Second, make sure that the backup was created before the malware threat had infiltrated the device.
