Threat Database Adware Adless Browsing

Adless Browsing

Adless Browsing is a browser extension that describes itself as a convenient tool that can allow users to browse the Internet without worrying about advertisements. More specifically, the application is supposed to skip advertisements automatically. Unfortunately, its main functionality turns out to be performing the exact opposite - users with Adless Browsing added to their Web browsers experience an increased amount of encountered advertisements. As a result, Adless Browsing has been classified as an adware application.

Advertisements generated by unproven sources such as adware should not be approached carelessly. They are often used as lures to trick users into visiting deceptive or outright unsafe third-party websites. The destinations of the redirects may include phishing pages, fake giveaways, suspicious adult pages and other shady sites. Users also are likely to be presented with offers to install other intrusive applications and PUPs (Potentially Unwanted Programs).

It should be noted that Adless Browsing itself is considered a PUP due to the underhanded methods involved in its distribution. For example, infosec researchers have observed this application to be promoted by a deceptive website. The page tries to trick users into thinking that they need to install the free extension to continue browsing the page.
