The Active Search Bar application has been classified as a browser hijacker, due to its intrusive capabilities. Once installed on the user's computer or device, the application will target the Web browser and establish control over multiple important settings. For example, users start noticing unwanted redirects to an unfamiliar website because the browser hijacker has modified the browser's homepage, new tab page and default search engine.
The website promoted by Active Search Bar is activesearchbar.me. It is a fake search engine that only imitates the functionality of a legitimate one. Indeed, activesearchbar.me is absolutely incapable of generating any search results on its own. The initiated search queries will instead be redirected to search.yahoo.com and users will be shown results taken from it. Keep in mind that most dubious search engines can adjust their behavior based on certain factors, such as the user's IP address and geolocation. This could lead to some users being presented with untrustworthy or low-quality results taken from dubious search engines.
Due to the fact that the Active Search Bar is likely to be distributed via questionable methods, including software bundles, it also is classified as a PUP (Potentially Unwanted Program). PUPs are notorious for being equipped with data-tracking functionalities. These intrusive applications could be spying on the user's browsing activities and transmitting the browsing and search histories to their operators continuously.
