The Winvmx Client is a Potentially Unwanted Program (PUP). The most common way in which the Winvmx Client and similar software are installed is by bundling them with other software. The Winvmx Client may be installed when computer users download one of these programs or other PUPs for free unless the computer users opt out explicitly. The Winvmx Client runs in the background and connects to various Web pages, 'watching' videos and loading advertisements in a hidden browser window. This content is not displayed on the infected computer. However, it will affect the computer's performance definitely since bandwidth, and other resources are being used to access this content automatically. The most likely reasons for the Winvmx Client's behavior is to generate advertisements revenue by inflating these websites' traffic and page views artificially. The Winvmx Client also may be part of a Black Hat search engine optimization or other shady online advertising tactics.

The Winvmx Client – An Unwelcomed Client

To carry out its hoax, the Winvmx Client installs a custom version of the Chrome Web browser that does not display a visible Web browser window. This allows the Winvmx Client to perform its activities in the background, without alerting the computer users. This version of the Chrome Web browser will not appear in the Start Menu or desktop, and will not alert the victim of its presence unless the computer users start looking for it explicitly. The presence of the Winvmx Client may be noticed due to various symptoms, most of which are related to their adverse effects on the computer's performance. The symptoms of the Winvmx Client may include the following:

  • The computers affected by the Winvmx Client may perform slowly and fail to respond to commands and other tasks quickly.
  • The Winvmx Client may cause affected computer users to use much higher than normal processing power and other resources.
  • The Winvmx Client may cause file processes such as vmxclient.exe or svcvmx.exe to run automatically on the affected computer. These will appear in the Windows Task Manager and may indicate in their descriptions that they are related to the 32-bit version of the Winvmx Client.
  • Apart from performing slowly, the increased use of the resources by the Winvmx Client, as well as possible software conflicts may cause frequent freezing and stop applications and windows on the affected computer.
  • Since the Winvmx Client connects to various websites and videos as part of its tactic constantly, computer users may notice that their Internet speeds are severely affected due to the Winvmx Client's constant use of bandwidth.

Dealing with the Winvmx Client

When computer users attempt to close file processes related to the Winvmx Client, the error message 'Unable to Terminate Process The operation could not be completed. Access is denied.' will appear on the affected computer. Trying to run an anti-virus software may often load alerts that read 'The Requested Resource is in Use,' meaning that it may interfere with security software in some ways. The best way to prevent the Winvmx Client from being installed is by making sure that when installing any new software, every step of the installation process is read carefully. This kind of software bundling may happen because con artists count on computer users not reading the user's agreements and installation processes carefully. Computer users can opt out of the Winvmx Client, but they will have to click on a checkbox or indicate this using the Custom or Advanced installation specifically. Once the Winvmx Client has been installed, PC security researchers advise using Safe Mode to start up the affected computer. The Winvmx Client may be removed manually using Add and Remove Programs in the Windows Control Panel. However, a reliable security program capable of detecting and removing low-level threats such as PUPs and adware should be able to take care of the problems involving the Winvmx Client easily. Fortunately, the Winvmx Client is not destructive or threatening and is regarded as a low-level threat.
