Win Tonic

The Win Tonic software from hxxp://wintonic[.]net/ is promoted as a “complete Web and Windows protection suite,” which you can try out for free, but you will need to pay 19,95 USD every six months if you want to use all of its features. The Win Tonic software is associated with two sites — hxxp://wintonic[.]net/ and hxxps://pctonics[.]com/, — which are used to market and deploy both the trial and paid versions of Win Tonic, a.k.a. PC Tonics. PC users can install Win Tonic/PC Tonics and run a free scan with the program, but the errors listed by the scanner can be addressed only after paying for the commercial license.

You might want to know that Win Tonic/PC Tonics is a product of an India-based company called Pcvark Software Pvt. Ltd. that is registered to 32 Gopal Tower, Gopal Bari, Jaipur - 302001 Rajasthan. The company is known for its misuse of the CCleaner brand name (hxxp://www.piriform[.]com) in August 2017 and the release of questionable system optimization products since 2015. The Win Tonic program may claim to boost your machine’s performance by cleaning files and securing your online activity by cleaning the Web cache, cookies, and using a public Web filtering service. However, these statements are not entirely true — a sufficient free space on the disk means a stable OS and an empty Web cache means less tracking cookies, but that does not equal an increased performance. Internet browsers like Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, and Opera have built-in URL scanners so that freeing disk space can be done via Microsoft’s Disk Cleanup tool and the Web cache can be deleted via the browser’s settings. The Win Tonic/PC Tonicx package is deemed as a Potentially Unwanted Program (PUP) that is tagged by AV scanners as:

  • PUP.Optional.WinTonic
  • Program.Unwanted.2349
  • Suspicious_GEN.F47V1114
  • Win32.Trojan.WisdomEyes.16070401.9500.9874
