Webwhiteway.com

By ZulaZuza in Browser Hijackers

Webwhiteway.com and Egosearch.com are fake search engines associated with a dangerous applet that started making its rounds online in November of 2011. This applet is particularly dangerous because of its extremely small size, making it suitable for use with exploits that take advantage of vulnerabilities in Java and Adobe Flash. Once it is installed on the victim's computer system, often injected directly after visiting a malicious website or clicking on a corrupted advertisement, this applet is able to hijack the victim's Internet browser, in order to force it to visit Webwhiteway.com and Egosearch.com. These two websites have similar layouts, featuring a stock photo image in the upper-left corner (for example, in the case of Egosearch.com the image is of a plane taking off), a small search box in the center, and a number of malicious links. Webwhiteway.com and Egosearch.com appear to be poorly built, probably in a rush. This implies that they may belong to a much ample network of fake search engines. ESG security researchers consider it is quite likely that computer users can expect more clones of Webwhiteway.com and Egosearch.com in the future. Because any kind of browser hijacker is extremely dangerous, ESG security researchers strongly recommend disinfecting your computer system, if you find that you are being forced to visit Webwhiteway.com and Egosearch.com repeatedly.

The Danger in Websites Like Webwhiteway.com and Egosearch.com

While fake search engines like Webwhiteway.com and Egosearch.com seem fairly harmless, PC security analysts tend to take these threats seriously. This is because websites like Webwhiteway.com and Egosearch.com act as intermediaries between malware infections and will often compound an existing malware infection, resulting in some of the most dangerous malware threats taking residence in the infected computer. This is because the applet associated with Webwhiteway.com and Egosearch.com causes the victim to lose control of their Internet browser, resulting in being forced to visit repeatedly Webwhiteway.com and Egosearch.com and other fake search engines. However, the problem does not stop there. Webwhiteway.com and Egosearch.com contain malicious links, below the search box. These links will almost invariably lead to websites containing malware infections and known online scams (such as rogue security programs and illegal online pharmacies). Visiting websites associated with Webwhiteway.com and Egosearch.com search results is almost guaranteed to infect your computer with all manner of malware infections, including dangerous Trojans, spyware, adware and even bootkits and rookits (considered being some of the most resilient malware threats.)
