The Vudu Search browser extension is promoted as a "Recommended Extension" at Install.vudusearch.com/?pid=11111 and has a page on the Chrome Web Store at Chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/vudu-search/fhkpigdkphcbdaeiklohppggcnhdbojh. You may be suggested that the Vudu Search is deemed as a recommended tool but it is being used by a little over four thousand Web surfers and it is not featured among the top extensions on the Chrome Web Store. The Vudu Search app is supposed to allow users to change their default search engine in two clicks. We have installed the Vudu Search extension on a test browser, and the app requested the following permissions:
- Read and change all your data on the websites you visit.
- Change your search settings to feed.vudusearch.com.
PC users should note that the Vudu Search extension manifests as an icon in the navigation panel and provides users with quick commands to set Google, Bing, or Yahoo as the default search provider. However, that is not true entirely because the default search aggregator for Vudu Search users is feed.vudusearch.com. Web surfers who run the Vudu Search may be rerouted to Vudu Search and then to Google, Bing, or Yahoo depending on their settings saved in the Vudu Search pop-up menu. The feed.vudusearch.com domain is registered to the 65.52.33.232 IP address as a parked domain, which means it is used as a redirect-portal to third-party content. In this case, the feed.vudusearch.com portal is configured to send users to Google, Yahoo, and Bing depending on the settings enforced in the Vudu Search pop-up menu. You might want to know that the feed.vudusearch.com domain is owned by a rivaling search service named Search.snapdo.com, which is associated with many ad-supported programs and questionable browser extensions. We have found that the Vudu Search has several clones, which are offered under different names and correspond to different URLs but they all send data to Search.snapdo.com and may redirect users to engines like Google, Bing and Yahoo. The following portals are found to perform the same as feed.vudusearch.com:
- feed.bazzsearch[.]com — BazzSearch
- pixel.browserhunt[.]com — BbrowserHunt
- pixel.mountainbrowse[.]com — MountainBrowse
- pixel.newtab[.]online — Newtab
- search.qpgriefi[.]com — Qpgriefi
The feed.vudusearch.com portal appears to perform the same way as portals we have recorded in the past, which include Splintersearch.com, Search.chunckapp.com, and Search.tagadin.com. All domains mentioned so far are connected to Search.snapdo.com and appear to generate Web traffic to various search services providers. The domains listed above may be used to generate ad revenue by rerouting users and collecting search keywords. You may want to read the terms of use and privacy agreement posted on Vudusearch.com/terms.html and Vudusearch.com/privacy.html regarding the Vudu Search extension. The Vudu Search app is classified as a Potentially Unwanted Program (PUP) that is programmed to make browser redirects to various search engines. Computer users that do not appreciate the browser redirects by Vudu Search may want to remove it via the Extensions Manager and use an anti-spyware instrument to clean the tracking cookies the app may have downloaded.
