Troj/VB-FRI is a Trojan that is linked to the spread of malicious network worm on Facebook. Criminals use malicious links in order to trick their victims into becoming infected with Troj/VB-FRI and its associated malware. Once infected, the victim will have his/her Facebook account hijacked by the worm, which will then send out additional malicious links through Facebook chat and by posting them on the victim's friends' Facebook walls. The main danger of Troj/VB-FRI is that even experienced computer users can fall for this trick when the infected link seems to come from a trusted friend or family member attempting to chat on Facebook's chat application.
An Overview of Malware Associated with Troj/VB-FRI
The link through which Troj/VB-FRI spreads claims to be a screensaver with an icon depicting two blond women. However, clicking on this link will actually take the user to a malicious file hosted on an Israeli website. The malicious file has been posted repeatedly under several different websites. Troj/VB-FRI may be detected in different ways, depending on your anti-malware product of choice. However, it is important to make sure that your computer is protected and that your security software is fully updated. Even then, it is even more important to learn to recognize fake chat messages and email and to distinguish them from real communications. It is usually a good rule of thumb to avoid clicking on any links or downloading file attachments contained in unsolicited email or messages. If you receive a link and a message through instant messaging (for example, Facebook chat), it is important to try to establish a conversation with the other person before accepting any files or links. It is entirely possible that you are talking to a chatbot rather than to your Facebook friend. If you fall for this scam and click on the included link, it will download other malware from the Internet and install it on your computer system. In the end, the main aim of Troj/VB-FRI is to install Dorkbot on your computer system, a dangerous malware infection designed to take over your computer, and include it in a botnet (a vast network of infected computer systems that are controlled remotely in order to work together).
