SkullLocker Screenlocker

By GoldSparrow in Trojans

The SkullLocker Screenlocker is a Trojan that is being used to block access to the victim's computers. PC security researchers advise computer users to protect their machines with a skilled security program to prevent infections like the SkullLocker Screenlocker. They also should take extra precautions when browsing the Web and handling possible suspicious content that could compromise a computer.

The SkullLocker Screenlocker can’t Delete or Encrypt Your Files

The SkullLocker Screenlocker was first observed in the final week of June 2017. The SkullLocker Screenlocker may be delivered as a corrupted email attachment, which will often use macro scripts to download and execute the SkullLocker Screenlocker on the victim's computer. This is a delivery tactic that the SkullLocker Screenlocker has in common with countless other ransomware and screen locker Trojans. Fortunately, the SkullLocker Screenlocker is a screen locker but does not have the capability to delete or encrypt files on the affected computer. This means that although the SkullLocker Screenlocker may block access to the victim's computer, the victim's files will remain intact and the victim will have no problem accessing the affected files. The SkullLocker Screenlocker prevents the victim's access to the infected computer's desktop. The SkullLocker Screenlocker displays a full-screen message that functions as a lock screen. This message consists of a black screen with an illustration of a human skull. The SkullLocker Screenlocker message contains the following short text message:

'Your screen has been blocked. To exit put the password below in the box.
The password is: 12345
Put the password here [TEXT BOX] Verify'

Following the instructions in this message simply creates a new screen locker window. The second SkullLocker Screenlocker lock screen message is simply another black screen with the message below in the center, written in red text:

'YOUR SCREEN IS LOCKED YOU CANNOT GET OUT!'

What is the Purpose of the SkullLocker Screenlocker

The SkullLocker Screenlocker can be classified as 'trollware' since it doesn't seem to cause destructive damage to the infected computer and its intention does not seem to be to demand a ransom payment, like most ransomware. The SkullLocker Screenlocker seems designed to harass computer users completely, with no further aim than to irritate and annoy the victim. The SkullLocker Screenlocker, unlike other screen lockers, does not prevent the victim from accessing the Task Manager, the keyboard shortcuts, the Registry Editor, the MSCONFIG panel, or the many other Windows features that could help computer users recover from one of these attacks. This means that it is relatively simple to recover from the SkullLocker Screenlocker lock screen since it can be skipped with the simple use of a keyboard shortcut (such as Alt+F4).

Other Possibilities Concerning the Purpose of the SkullLocker Screenlocker

In its current state, the SkullLocker Screenlocker is mostly harmless. Once the computer users manage to bypass the SkullLocker Screenlocker message, they can simply remove the SkullLocker Screenlocker with the help of a potent security program. However, it is entirely possible that the SkullLocker Screenlocker is a test version or an unfinished version of a more harmful infection. For example, if the ability to use keyboard shortcuts and Windows features were blocked, then the SkullLocker Screenlocker could function as a standard screen locker Trojan. Adding the ability to encrypt files to the SkullLocker Screenlocker's operations would turn the SkullLocker Screenlocker into a threatening ransomware Trojan. Because of this, it is insistently recommended to remove the SkullLocker Screenlocker immediately if a computer becomes infected and take preventive measures to limit the effects of the SkullLocker Screenlocker after an infection. For example, having file backups and a reliable security program will protect the machine from most ransomware Trojans, screen lockers, and other similar threats, including low-level trollware like the SkullLocker Screenlocker and its variants.
