Threat Database Browser Hijackers Sferverification.com

Sferverification.com

Sferverification.com is a website carrying out a browser-based tactic. The goal is to trick the unsuspecting users into subscribing to the site's push notification services, resulting in unwanted advertisements being delivered to the screen of the affected device.

The tactic's crux relies on the users not paying too much attention to the fake error messages displayed upon landing on sites such as Sferverification.com. Most tactics pose as a fake bot captcha check, but Sferverification.com has adopted a different tactic. It plays on the curiosity of the users to see some adult content by displaying the following text:

  • 'Sferverification.com wants to Show notifications'
  • 'If you are 18+ click Allow. To access, click Allow'

However, instead of seeing any 18+ content, anyone who clicks the 'Allow' button will start receiving a hefty dose of third-party pop-up advertisements. The advertisements may include shady adult websites or fraudulent online casinos. The frequency of the pop-up windows could start interfering with the normal browsing conducted on the affected device.

Users are strongly encouraged to deal with the Sferverification.com tactic as soon as possible. All it takes is to open the 'Settings' menu of the browser, navigate to the permissions section, and revoke everything that has been granted to the misleading website.
