Threat Database Browser Hijackers Service-update.network

Service-update.network

Service-update.network is a mostly empty website. However, don't let that fool you, as its only purpose is to propagate a popular browser-based tactic. By exploiting various social-engineering tactics, this website tries to trick users into subscribing to its push notification services by clicking the 'Allow' button. No matter the exact message the website states, what clicking the button does is giving it all of the permission necessary to generate intrusive advertisements.

The approach chosen by Service-update.network is for it to pretend to be conducting a captcha check for bots. It displays the message: 'Click Allow to confirm you are not a robot!' prominently. Additional fake alert and error messages also could be presented. Some variations include:

  • Service-update.network wants to Show notifications
  • Service-update.network says: CLICK ALLOW TO CLOSE THIS PAGE

Falling for Service-update.network's trap will result in the emergence of numerous unsolicited advertisements on the affected device's screen. Users will see advertisements for dubious online game sites, offers for suspicious software or software updates that most likely contain Potentially Unwanted Programs (PUPs) hidden inside.

It is recommended to simply ignore the Service-update.network website if you happen to land on it.
