SeekService.com

By Domesticus in Browser Hijackers

SeekService.com has all the trappings of an actual search engine. However, this website is part of a scam that involves setting up websites disguised as low-budget search engines that display little more than advertisements and thinly-cloaked spam. SeekService.com has many clones, since SeekService.com is a member of a large family of search engines with nearly identical interfaces. These tend to use one of three icons: a globe, a simple magnifying glass, or a magnifying glass that is more stylized with and colored than the other. SeekService.com's design belongs to this third group, although SeekService.com is essentially identical to the other family of search engines using a simple magnifying glass or globe in everything except for its outward appearance.

While visiting SeekService.com is probably not enough to infect your computer system with malware, this website is still considered as a danger to your computer system's security. This is because criminals promote SeekService.com with malware known as a browser hijacker. It is also important to note that SeekService.com's supposed search results will usually contain numerous links to websites containing malware and other malicious content. A browser hijacker associated with SeekService.com will also cause other problems on the infected computer, such as pop-up windows, decreased security settings, slow Internet connection, and general instability.

How Criminals Use SeekService.com to Profit from Attacking Your Computer

The main way to generate revenue online is through advertising, and SeekService.com is no exception. Criminals set up hundreds of these websites in order to generate a substantial profit from the advertisement impressions and pay-per-click marketing included in each of them. Of course, it is easy to generate advertisement revenue when you can force computer users to visit your website repeatedly. Criminals use a browser hijacker to take over the infected computer system's web browser, by making changes to the way the infected system connects to the Internet. Then, the victim can be directed to the SeekService.com website repeatedly, generating advertisement revenue each time they visit or click on a search result. Because of this, inexperienced computer users are prime candidates for this scam, since they are less likely to notice that SeekService.com is not a real search engine and may actually attempt their searches on this supposed search engine. Redirects to websites in the SeekService.com family have been observed in the wild since 2010. The main browser hijacker responsible for these browser redirects has come to be known as the Google Redirect Virus because of its propensity for directing the victim after trying to carry out a search on Google or other useful search engines.
