Threat Database Browser Hijackers Search-engin-ext.com

Search-engin-ext.com

Search-engin-ext.com is a browser hijacker application that attempts to convince users to install it on their systems by providing a useful ability to mark a specific selection of text, right-click it, and in the menu choose the desired search engine with which to conduct the search. The options are 'Search with Bing,' 'Yahoo,' and 'DuckDuckGo.'

Although some may find this feature convenient, the privacy concerns raised by having Search-engin-ext.com installed on your computer shouldn't be ignored. First, the application will take over the user's browser and, more specifically, the homepage, new page tab and the default search engine settings. All three will be modified to open the promoted search-engin-ext.com address. Subsequently, whenever the browser itself or a new page is opened, it will result in artificial traffic being directed towards the sponsored address. The modified settings will be locked, and the user will not be able to change them back to their previous state while the browser hijacker is still installed.

Furthermore, Search-engin-ext.com will begin to collect various data automatically. Among the details it logs are the device's IP address, browser's type, the time certain pages are visited and both, the browsing and search history. The application may try to extract further private information from the user through login or registration pages.
