Russia Under U.S. Investigation for Purported Election Hacking Attacks

russian election hackingTo say the presidential election cycle in the United States of America is entertaining is an understatement. With all that is circulating in the news cycles covering presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, there remains to be a looming issue surrounding hackers who aim to attack certain aspects of the upcoming election.

U.S. intelligence and law enforcement agencies are currently investigating Russian entities that have supposedly launched an operation to disrupt the upcoming presidential elections in November 2016. Officials are ramping up their efforts to seek those who are inclined to spread disinformation and hack the U.S. political system in some form leading up to November's elections.

According to a report in the Washington Post, there is currently no definitive proof of any particular Russian organization or operation that is actively attacking the elections in the US. However, there has been what the article published in the Washington Post when discussing how U.S. authorizes feel on the subject matter as being a "significant concern."

With the countless email documents that were allegedly exposed within the Democratic National Committee in recent months due to the actions of WikiLeaks, the FBI has been working overtime to finding the source of the data breach. During most of the investigation, all signs have pointed to Russian being the culprit and source of the attack that WikiLeaks was able to expose later.

According to an anonymous source cited in the Washington Post's article, Russian actions that targeted U.S. elections are part of a global campaign. While the campaign allegedly conducted by entities in Russia are suspected to be the culprits in recent election data attacks, there is no 100% certainty in predicting them as the aggressor for forthcoming U.S. election hacks.

Law enforcement and U.S. intelligence agencies are on their toes as of late as potential Russian election attacks could interfere with polling results come November when the selection of the new leader of the free world commences. Currently, U.S. director of national intelligence, James Clapper, is in charge of the recent investigation. Under his leadership, the representatives from his office and the Department of Justice have not released any follow-up reports or comments on the Washington Post's recent report.

It should be known that officials are not taking the previous attacks or suspected future attacks on the U.S. elections lightly. With information widely being publicized and picked apart at any chance that outfits like WikiLeaks can get their hands on sensitive data puts some official at a disadvantage and at the same time helps in them uncovering the hackers initially responsible for collecting such information.

We look to U.S. officials and the FBI to pay close attention to any data leaks or compromising of systems surrounding the upcoming presidential election. While the election remains to be controversial, we can expect backlash on either end of the isle no matter if Russia is successful in their alleged efforts to attack November's elections in some form.
