Ratty RAT

The Ratty RAT (Remote Access Trojan) has been around for quite a while. The authors of the threat have uploaded the source code of the Ratty RAT online, which means that anyone who wants to get access to it is free to do so. According to reports, the creators of the Ratty RAT quit the project in 2017, but, by this time, there were already many cyber crooks who had downloaded the source code of the threat. This means that even if the original creators of the threat wanted to put an end to it, they would be unable to do so as countless third-parties are distributing the Ratty RAT online.

Some cybercriminals who have the source code of the Ratty RAT have made sure to further weaponize this threat by applying additional features and modules to it. The Ratty RAT enables its operators to:

  • Run remote commands.
  • Collect data.
  • Take screenshots of the user's desktop and active windows.
  • Collect keystrokes to obtain sensitive data like login credentials and banking details.
  • Record video via the Webcam of the compromised host.Record audio via the microphone of the infected system.

Clearly, the Ratty RAT is not a threat that one should underestimate. This RAT has the potential to cause significant financial losses. If you want to protect your system and your data from threats like the Ratty RAT, you should make sure to install an up-to-date, trustworthy anti-virus software suite.
