PUP.KidLogger (KidLogger, KidLogger.B) is detected and treated as malware by most anti-malware solutions for Mac. It is, however, legitimately developed and sold by a subsidiary of SafeJKA S.R.L. The company created Elite Keylogger as a computer monitoring tool geared towards parents looking to monitor their children and that’s not illegal. However, anti-malware solutions will detect it as malware because it can be used maliciously to spy on users and steal information. By design KidLogger is trying to stay hidden from the user and that further makes it suitable for malicious use.
PUP.KidLogger has a few variations which come at different prices and have different functions. The professional version has a lot of the capabilities one would expect from a commercial keylogger software.
- Typed keystroke recording.
- Recording of surrounding sound.
- Screenshot recording.
- Email reporting.
- Blocking websites.
- Chat recording.
KidLogger’s functionality combined with the fact the developers designed it to operate stealthily makes it easily lend itself to use by cybercriminals. While it can be useful for monitoring purposes, in the wrong hands KidLogger can lead to serious damages and that makes it a severe threat. For those reasons, antivirus software will classify Elite Kelylogger as malware and remove it if necessary.
