ProPDFConverter is a product of Mindspark Interactive Network, and it pretends to be a legitimate application that gives the opportunity for users to convert PDF files to other file formats. Because of its functionalities, this app is categorized as a Potentially Unwanted Program (PUP), and more precisely, as a browser hijacker. ProPDFConverter can be downloaded from the website [hxxp://www.propdfconverter[.]com/index.jhtml] and it has versions for Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome. For Chrome, this rogue application can be installed from [hxxps://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/propdfconverter/ebmaoobbcnbgkgigiamgnadajdkemkfp]. Similar PUPs from the same publisher are Gifables, MyVideoTab, Astrology Searcher, StudyHQ and many others.
ProPDFConverter is distributed as a freeware and can be derived from its official website. ProPDFConverter also can land on a user’s machine without intention. Installed as a third-party tool along with a regular application, the PUP can infiltrate a system through the “bundling” method. The modifications made by ProPDFConverter may be harmful to the user. This PUP will change the default homepage, search engine, and “new tab” URL settings of their browser, setting up a fake search engine called hp.myway.com as their default search engine. Thus, ProPDFConverter will force them to visit this address each time they open a new browser tab or search through the URL bar, generating traffic for its developers. However, the PUP can distort the user’s browsing experience. It is typical for browser hijackers to be able to record information that can then be used for advertising purposes and lead to privacy issues.
The files related to ProPDFConverter are detected by some anti-malware scanners as:
- Win32:UnwantedSig [PUP]
- Adware.MyWebSearch.120
- PUP.Optional.MindSpark
- not-a-virus:HEUR:WebToolbar.Win32.Agent.ge…
- TROJ_GEN.R002H0CK117
- Application.Win32.BrowseFox.nlnbg
- Application.WebToolbar (A)
