The Privacy Search Plus browser extension for Google Chrome is promoted as a valuable additional to your Internet client that can secure your search operations online. The Privacy Search Plus extension has an official site that can be accessed at privacysearchplus.com and you can find a page on the Chrome Web store at chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/privacy-search-plus/khmhedbblhejonlhedmejhfcdjejcodl. Web surfers are invited to install the Privacy Search Plus browser extension with the following marketing pitch:
'You should feel confident knowing that what you are searching for is NOT being tracked. The Privacy Search Plus extension will redirect your non-private searches to a private results page to help keep you from being tracked from top search engines.'
The site for the Privacy Search Plus does not provide information on how the extension works. It simply says that your non-private searches are redirected to a private results page. However, when you add the Privacy Search Plus extension, it places an icon in your toolset and does not make any other changes regarding your search engines and privacy-related settings. You may think that Privacy Search Plus may redirect your searches to engines like DuckDuckGo and Ixquick.com, which are known to hold your privacy at the greatest of regards but the app does nothing of the sort. The Privacy Search Plus is known to require the following privileges:
- Read and change all your data on websites you visit.
- Communicate with cooperating websites.
- Manage your apps, extensions, and themes.
At the time of writing, 15 570 Web surfers are using the Privacy Search Plus to secure their online searchers. Cyber security analysts perceive the Privacy Search Plus extension as a Potentially Unwanted Program (PUP), which does not appear to provide the features promised at privacysearchplus.com. Moreover, the app may collect non-personally identifiable data about your online activity and share it with advertisers to improve product positioning on related sites. You may want to read the privacy policy at privacysearchplus.com/privacy/ where it is stated that the app records your:
- Device type
- IP address
- Location
- Unique device identifier
- Usage patterns
- Browser version
The Privacy Search Plus extension behaves like MaskSearch and Shield Plus Privacy Protector. Computer users may want to remove the app and prevent it from leaking information about their online routine to unknown third parties. You should remove the Privacy Search Plus with the help of a trusted anti-spyware that can clean all traces of the app.
