The POLIISI Osasto Tietoverkkorikollisuuden Virus is the Finnish variant of the Ukash Virus. POLIISI Osasto Tietoverkkorikollisuuden Virus and its variants are designed to blackmail computer users by pretending to be part of a law enforcement or government operation targeting the victim's computer. There are variants of these ransomware Trojans for different countries, using the targeted country's main police agency, language, flag and other country-specific details to target computer users in that location. It is important to remember that the POLIISI Osasto Tietoverkkorikollisuuden Virus has no associated with Finland's government or police force and is part of a well known online scam.
Ransomware Trojans like the POLIISI Osasto Tietoverkkorikollisuuden Virus typically take the infected computer hostage and then blackmail the victim promising to turn back the computer to its initial state. There are typically two main kinds of ransomware Trojans, those that encrypt files on the victim's computer and then charge a ransom in order to decrypt the affected files and ransomware Trojans typically known as Winlockers. Winlockers lock down Windows, blocking access to the Windows desktop and many other components that may allow a computer user to access files on the infected computer. The POLIISI Osasto Tietoverkkorikollisuuden Virus is a kind of Winlocker that, apart from blocking access to the victim's files, displays a fake message from the Finnish police force claiming that the infected computer was related with criminal actions and that it was locked because of an official investigation. The ransom is presented as a 'fine' of 100 Euros for engaging in criminal activities such as viewing child pornography or distributing software that was copied illegally.
Since the POLIISI Osasto Tietoverkkorikollisuuden Virus blocks access to all files and applications on the infected computer, the main difficulty when dealing with a POLIISI Osasto Tietoverkkorikollisuuden Virus infection is circumventing the Winlocker component in order to launch a reliable anti-malware application. Fortunately, this can be done by starting up Windows in Safe Mode with a Command Prompt (and then using the command line to launch your security software, the Windows Registry Editor or the Windows Explorer). It can also be accomplished by using an equivalent boot method such as starting up from an external memory device or from a network shared drive.
