The Open Plugins browser extension from openplugins.com is promoted as a convenient tool for Web surfers to erase tracks of their online activity. The Open Plugins browser extension is said to support the same functionality of the Cookies Control extension. A closer look at the Open Plugins revealed that both programs are the same. Evidently, the Open Plugins extension is a renamed version of the Cookies Control, which has several clones we have encountered earlier in 2017. The company behind the Open Plugins software appears to have released clones named:
- Disable Cookies - chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/disable-cookies/lkmjmficaoifggpfapbffkggecbleang
- Cookies On-Off - chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/cookies-on-off/dceidjjhomnclmfgflmjaomohekdgdgb
- EditThisCookie - chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/editthiscookie/fngmhnnpilhplaeedifhccceomclgfbg
- Plugins Button - chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/plugins-button/bfkmdpfljdpopbemfaelnflapafbflgn
We have tried to identify the developers that created the Open Plugins extension and the associated versions mentioned above. However, they have used dummy accounts and privacy protection services by organizations like Whois Privacy Corp. The Open Plugins program may provide users with an interactive menu that looks like allow you to clean cookies, Web beacons and offline site data. The Open Plugins extension might clear your browser's cache and offer access to the Plug-ins Manager, but it may keep persistent tracking cookies on your PC. The Open Plugins software is classified as a Potentially Unwanted Program (PUP), which might not prove particularly useful. Additionally, the Open Plugins extension may request the right to show notifications, which may include promotional materials, discounts, and coupons for online stores like Amazon, Alibaba and eBay. The ads by Open Plugins may lead users to untrusted online shops and insecure online content. The lack of proper developer information, limited functionality, and numerous clones are not something you should overlook when you question whether to keep or remove the Open Plugins software.
