The New Tab Aid browser extension that you can find in the Chrome Web store and freeware bundles is promoted as a viable new tab page replacement for users. The New Tab Aid browser extension is developed by programmers associated with Mybrowserbar.com, which has ties to browser hijacking software. The New Tab Aid extension is promoted to users with the following marketing pitch:
'Enhance your New Tab Page with a Yahoo search box
New Tab Aid is a free, safe and friendly extension that offers you the possibility of searching the web with Yahoo from your new tab page.'
At first glance, the New Tab Aid app appears to make little to no modifications to your browser and only makes your browser load Search.yahoo.com instead of the default page. Web surfers that favor the Yahoo search engine might like what the New Tab Aid app has to offer. However, you should note that the New Tab Aid extension is designed to redirect users to a customized version of Yahoo hosted at search.yahoo.com/web?fr=spigot-nt-gc{SEARCH TERMS}, which may not be as productive as the original version. The engine at search.yahoo.com/web?fr=spigot-nt-gc{SEARCH TERMS} may include an increased number of sponsored search results and promotional materials compared to Yahoo.com. When you add New Tab Aid to Google Chrome, a pop-up window would appear and ask you to grant New Tab Aid the following rights:
- Read and change all your data on the websites you visit.
- Read and change your browsing history.
- Manage your apps, extensions and themes.
PC users should note that New Tab Aid is an ad-supported program that may interfere with third-party tools like uBlock Origin, Privacy Badger, and Ghostery that aim to restrict tracking technologies employed by advertisers. The ads on the custom Yahoo search provided by New Tab Aid may redirect users to unreliable online stores and vendors with a bad reputation. The New Tab Aid browser extension may not be the best new tab page replacement or your browser since it does not allow extensive customizations and you can not edit the speed dial tiles as the default new tab page for Chrome does. PC users that wish to enhance their new tab might be satisfied with New Tab Aid and wish to remove it with the help of a credible anti-spyware scanner.
