The musicNet Start browser extension is a re-branded version of the mixMusic Search riskware. Both apps are promoted on medianetnow.com and feature separate pages on the Chrome Web store. However, they exhibit the same behavior. Also, the musicNet Start extension may invite the user to add an optional component named 'MusicNet Home' developed by the programmers at medianetnow.com. The musicNet Start extension and the 'MusicNet Home' extension can be found at:
- chrome.google[.]com/webstore/detail/musicnet-start/hajmhmmilgmcmobmkdpncpbnbhljhojb
- chrome.google[.]com/webstore/detail/musicnet-home/ilnanmefnphbfjefajmciblllkdecep
When the users proceed to install the musicNet Start extension, they are redirected to a subpage of medianetnow.com via the link 'movix.medianetnow[.]com/wim/lp/offer/?t1=34&t=gomusix' where a progress bar is displayed. The layout of the page suggests the users that the installation of musicNet Start is incomplete unless another browser extension is not installed as well. The filmsNet Search browser extension has a clone named filmsNet Start, and both apps can be found at:
- chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/filmsnet-search/ngdgoemjejbpcgjagnbkcpmibdijoeaa
- chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/filmsnet-start/iiigjoccgnjkohkbfglghdpnbehmlkfj
The software promoted via medianetnow.com can be installed for free, and you are not required to pay a subscription fee. You should read the documentation posted on medianetnow.com/privacy.php and medianetnow.com/terms.php because the musicNet Start app and related extensions are ad-supported products. The browser extensions advertised by medianetnow.com might use information like your Internet history and your input on movie.eanswers.com to display targeted commercials on your new tab page. The musicNet Start software is classified as a Potentially Unwanted Program (PUP) that may lead users to add several ad-supported extensions to the browser, which may result in a diminished browser performance. The musicNet Start and MusicNet Home extensions require the following privileges to be installed:
- Read and change all your data on the websites you visit.
- Read and change your browsing history.
- Change your new tab settings.
If you add filmsNet Search and filmsNet Start to your browser, your default search would be changed to movie.eanswers.com. PC users may be redirected to movie.eanswers.com and then to search.yahoo.com while using the extension promoted by medianetnow.com. The MusicNet Home program does not offer users the chance to customize the search engine on the new tab so that it points to something else then search.yahoo.com. Many users may not like the functionality of musicNet Start and the way it urges users to add more than one extension to their Internet client. You can remove musicNet Start, related apps and tracking cookies with the help of a trusted anti-spyware scanner.
