Hidemysearch

The Hidemysearch browser extension for Google Chrome is deemed as a Potentially Unwanted Program (PUP). The Hidemysearch extension is promoted via hxxp://www.hidemysearch[.]com and Chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/hidemysearch/mieancdfgcnhmgpomcbmihmjjipfpklb as a search proxy service. The Hidemysearch extension is stated to hide your searches from companies like Google Inc., Yahoo Inc. and the Microsoft Corp. What you are not told is that the Hidemysearch search proxy service is related to portals such as saferqueries.com, yoursafersearch.com, search.mysafesearch.net and chumsearch.com, which are associated with cases of browser hijacking. The hxxp://www.hidemysearch[.]com site does not offer contact information and a way for users to submit complaints. The company behind the app does not appear to be registered as a services provider, and Web surfers are expected to give the following permissions to the Hidemysearch browser extension:

  • Read and change all data on the sites they visit.
  • Change the page they see when opening a new tab.
  • Change their search settings to search.hidemysearch.com.

Educated computer users should reconsider installing the Hidemysearch software as it is reported to perform browser redirects and load results via Bing.com despite its marketed functionality. You might wish to remove the Hidemysearch extension from Google Chrome and use a VPN solution instead. Leading Internet companies like Yahoo, Google, Facebook, Microsoft, Twitter, and Instagram use statistical data to provide customized experiences to users and facilitate behavioral marketing, which pays for their "free services." Unfortunately, there are extensions like Hidemysearch, which lead users into thinking that they offer protection while doing exactly the opposite to what they are promised. It is true that Hidemysearch may not send data to Google but the presentation of Hidemysearch is rather vague, and that is not something you should overlook. You can remove all files related to the Hidemysearch extension with the help of a trustworthy anti-malware scanner.
