Threat Database Ransomware Hhmm Ransomware

Hhmm Ransomware

Cybersecurity researchers have identified another threatening malware tracked as the Hhmm Ransomware. Hhmm is designed to encrypt the user's data, making it unusable until the victim pays a ransom to receive the necessary decryption keys from the attackers. Once the Hhmm Ransomware infiltrates a system, it uses a powerful encryption algorithm to lock files of various types, including documents, PDFs, archives, databases, images, audio and video files. Hhmm appends a new file extension, '.hhmm,' to the name of every file it encrypts. Additionally, a text file named '_readme.txt' is created, which serves as a ransom note outlining the demands of the hackers. The threat is part of the infamous STOP/Djvu Ransomware family.

The Hhmm Ransomware Creates a Ransom Note with Demands

The ransom note informs victims that their data has been encrypted and the only way to retrieve it is to pay the ransom. The hackers demand a payment of $980, with the option to reduce the amount by half if the victim contacts them within 72 hours. The note provides two email addresses and a Telegram account ('restorealldata@firemail.cc,' 'gorentos@bitmessage.ch,' and '@datarestore') that the victims can use to communicate with the hackers. The ransomware operators also allow victims to send one file to be decrypted for free to prove that they can restore the victim's data. However, it is essential to note that trusting the cybercriminals is not recommended, as there is no assurance that they will fulfill their end of the bargain.

How to Protect Your Devices from Attacks by Threats Like the Hhmm Ransomware?

To avoid falling victim to ransomware attacks like Hhmm, users should take several precautions. For instance, they should avoid opening email attachments or clicking on links from untrusted sources, as these are popular methods used by attackers to spread malware. Additionally, keeping software and operating systems up to date with the latest security patches can prevent hackers from exploiting known vulnerabilities. Employing reputable anti-malware software can also help detect and remove threats like Hhmm from systems. Finally, users should regularly back up their essential files to an independent hard drive or a cloud-based storage service to ensure that they can still access their files if they are ever encrypted or lost.
