The FileShareFanatic software by Mindspark Interactive Network, Inc. is an ad-supported product, which is deemed as a Potentially Unwanted Program (PUP) by many cyber security vendors. There are several reasons why FileShareFanatic by Mindspark may trigger a security warning on systems. The main reason why FileShareFanatic might raise alerts is that it may make several modifications to the Internet browser and cause new tabs and pop-up windows to be opened on your screen automatically. The FileShareFanatic software is promoted to allow users send, receive and share large data packets, as well as benefit from additional functionalities. FileShareFanatic works as a browser add-on that may be installed on Google Chrome, Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox. The app requires the following privileges to function correctly:
- Read and change all your data on the websites you visit.
- Read and change your browsing history.
- Manage your downloads.
- Manage your apps, extensions and themes.
- Change your new tab to hp.myway.com.
The app is programmed to alter your new tab page to a custom version of Hp.myway.com found on Hp.myway.com/filesharefanatic/ttab02/index.html. You should note that the versions for IE and Firefox may change the start page to Hp.myway.com/filesharefanatic/ttab02/index.html as well. Once FileShareFanatic is up and running a new tab page is opened up and loaded with content from APN, LLC who are partners of Mindspark Interactive Network, Inc. The new tab loads the following link:
hxxp://ext.ask.com/index.jhtml?productname=filesharefanatic&installdate=2017080210&partnerid=^AYW^foxyyy^TTAB02^bg&si=&tbGuid=B1B065EE-B56B-4870-B53F-0FC92309D9FC&coId=89a82d8033824eeb8b8fc46ac3e3add2
The FileShareFanatic add-on is known to promote the 'Search Extension by Ask' program that may change your primary search aggregator to Ask.com. Users are not required to install the 'Search Extension by Ask' app if they wish to benefit from FileShareFanatic. Both tools may use information like your recently downloaded files, the list of third-party extensions, Internet history, and IP address to display targeted commercials on your screen. As mentioned at the beginning of this article, FileShareFanatic is supported by advertisers, and you should not be surprised to see product recommendations on your new tab page. You might want to read the terms of use and privacy agreement at Eula.mindspark.com/tos/ and Eula.mindspark.com/privacypolicy in case you have not used the Mindspark products before. The FileShareFanatic add-on may help users share Microsoft Office documents, LibreOffice documents and PDFs with friends easily. However, you should expect to see ads on your new tab page, and AV engines displaying notifications related to FileShareFanatic, which feature the following detection names:
- Adware.AdLoadCRT.Win32.544
- Adware.MyWebSearch.373376
- Application.WebToolbar (A)
- GrayWare/Win32.StartPage.gen
- PUA.MyWebSearch!8.EC
- PUP.Optional.MindSpark
- Win32/Virus.WebToolbar.5bb
- Win32:UnwantedSig [PUP]
