The BlooTab browser extension that you can find at Blootab.com is a free app that is promoted to enhance your new tab page. The BlooTab program may arrive on your computer in the company of other free apps and change your new tab page design automatically. The marketing pitch for BlooTab states:
'Enhance your browsing and search experience. With this beautiful abstract animation you will be always glad to open a new tab. Also you can check the weather in your location with hourly and 4 day forecast. Get a unique look for your new tab and homepage.'
However, many users may not like the changes implemented by BlooTab in their browser. The BlooTab New Tab includes and animated abstract background, a search box, and links to popular services like Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, Amazon, YouTube and Gmail. The BlooTab New Tab is styled like the native appearance of Google.com with support for the app drawer in the top right corner. You are likely to notice that the menu provided by BlooTab may include links to services that are not provided by Google and your new tab may include a weather forecast. Also, there may be two home buttons on the navigation panel. The BlooTab extension is reported to add a clone of the native "Home" icon to the browser and access data that it is not expected regarding its functionality. A visit to the Chrome Webstore page of BlooTab reveals that the app requires the following privileges:
- Read and change all your data on the websites you visit.
- Display notifications.
- Read ad change your bookmarks.
- Know your email address.
- Manage your apps, extensions and themes.
Computer security analysts that had a look at the code of the BlooTab extension stated that the app is ad-supported and may show promotional materials in your browser in the form of notifications and pop-up windows. The BlooTab New Tab may redirect users to Google when they input keywords on the search bar and ask to access their accounts on Gmail. Additionally, users are not provided with the Terms of Service Agreement at Blootab.com before installing the extension. The BlooTab software is classified as a Potentially Unwanted Program (PUP) that may display advertisements on your new tab and share data like your bookmarks collection and Internet history with marketers. Web surfers that wish to protect their privacy may like to avoid installing BlooTab and use a reliable anti-spyware instrument to erase the tracking cookies and riskware on their PCs.
