24/7 PC Guard is a rogue security application. This fake security program is used to make computer users believe that their computer is in danger. 24/7 PC Guard does this because 24/7 PC Guard will try to make inexperienced computer users give up their credit card or online banking information by trying to convince them to purchase a useless upgrade for 24/7 PC Guard. There are countless variants of this scam which usually involves the use of a fake security program, misleading error messages, and malicious scripts that deliberately cause trouble on the infected computer. The 24/7 PC Guard fake security program includes a telephone number where computer users can purchase 24/7 PC Guard or upgrade this fake security application. ESG malware analysts strongly advise against calling this number or installing 24/7 PC Guard on your computer.
24/7 PC Guard can infect a computer in several ways. The main three tactics criminals use to infect a computer with 24/7 PC Guard are the following:
- 24/7 PC Guard can be installed forcefully with the use of an exploit kit, rootkit infection, or downloader Trojan. What these do is exploit vulnerabilities in the victim's computer in order to force the computer to download and install 24/7 PC Guard. These kinds of attacks often occur after visiting an attack website specifically designed to infect visitors' computer systems.
- Computer users can be misled into downloading 24/7 PC Guard or Trojans that will then install 24/7 PC Guard by using social engineering tactics. Some of these include sending out malicious email messages with a disguised embedded link or file attachment or disguising 24/7 PC Guard as a popular file on file sharing networks.
- 24/7 PC Guard is also marketed as a legitimate security application with its own website and targeted advertisements. Many computer users may download and install 24/7 PC Guard themselves, believing that 24/7 PC Guard is a real security program.
Once 24/7 PC Guard is installed, 24/7 PC Guard harasses the victim with numerous fake error messages and a bogus system scan. These will all claim that the victim's computer is severely infected with worms, trojans, keyloggers, and other types of malware. However, trying to use 24/7 PC Guard to fix these supposed problems only leads to more error messages claiming that it is necessary to purchase an 'upgrade' for 24/7 PC Guard.
