Moia Ransomware

Cybercriminals have released a new ransomware threat named the Moia Ransomware. Although this piece of malware is classified as a variant from the STOP/Djvu ransomware family, that in no way diminishes its capacity to cause destruction. If it manages to infiltrate the targeted computers successfully, Moia will lock nearly all of the files stored there via a strong encryption algorithm. As a result, users will find themselves unable to open any of their personal or work-related files.

As part of its actions, the Moia Ransomware also will mark every encrypted file. It does so by appending '.moia' as a new file extension. The threat also will create a new text file on the system named '_readme.txt.' This file will carry the ransom note with instructions from the attackers.

Overview of the Demands

According to the note, the attackers want to be paid $980 if they are to provide the necessary decryption key and software tool to their victims. However, the amount of the ransom can supposedly be reduced by 50%. The only requirement is for the victims of the Moia Ransomware to establish contact with the hackers within 72 hours of the malware attack. For that purpose, and to receive additional details on making the payment, the note mentions two email addresses - 'manager@mailtemp.ch' and 'helprestoremanager@airmail.cc.' Finally, victims also are allowed to send one locked file with their message. If the file doesn't contain any valuable information, the hackers promise to decrypt and send it back for free.
