DownTango is a freeware program marketed as a downloading accelerator. It is developed by RedSky, a company based in Poland. DownTango was released in July of 2012. DownTango is, in fact, a download manager and is distributed through the website downtango.com. However, there have been reports that DownTango has been associated with browser hijackers causing unwanted behavior on computer user's operating systems. Symptoms reported include redirects to the DownTango website, having the victim's homepage changed to DownTango's websites.
DownTango's name come from the military expression 'tango down' which generally means to have downed a high profile target. DownTango is a freeware application that helps computer users manage their downloads. It has been released for Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8, both in 32-bit and 64-bit versions. DownTango generally works as a plug-in for the different web browser's installed on the computer user's system. It handles CAPTCHA for certain websites, downloads certain file types automatically, allows the computer user to monitor their bandwidth and allows the download of certain streaming video and audio.

The Problem with DownTango
Many computer security researchers have been suspicious about DownTango for a while. There are certain elements of DownTango's marketing that are usually associated with low-quality programs, adware or even more malicious applications. DownTango's reviews on many software review websites seem suspect and even its Wikipedia entry is marked for deletion due to the lack of reliable sources on this program. More importantly, copies of DownTango are also distributed bundled along with other files located on peer-to-peer file sharing networks or introduced automatically as a component of the installation of other applications – although computer users can often opt out from installing DownTango, this feature is easily overlooked.
If you find that DownTango has been installed on your computer without your authorization or that your web browser is forcing you to visit the DownTango web page repeatedly, ESG malware analysts advise using a trustworthy anti-malware scanner to analyze your computer for the presence of a browser hijacker. Removal of the DownTango plug-in should be followed with a thorough scan of all hard drives connected to the infected computer.
