US Department of Energy Investing $45 Million over 16 Projects to Improve Cybersecurity

The US Department of Energy has unveiled a substantial investment of $45 million across 16 projects aimed at bolstering cybersecurity within the energy sector. Spearheaded by the Office of Cybersecurity, Energy Security, and Emergency Response (CESER), these initiatives are designed to pioneer innovative solutions that mitigate cyber threats and enhance the resilience of critical energy infrastructure such as the power grid, utilities, pipelines, and renewable energy installations.

The funding will support various endeavors spanning six key focus areas. Among these are initiatives geared towards attack prevention and mitigation, the integration of advanced cybersecurity software, and the implementation of security measures embedded within energy systems from their design phase. Noteworthy projects include General Electric's development of a compact compute platform tailored for operational technology networks in natural gas compressor stations, as well as their exploration of quantum communication to fortify the transmission of time-sensitive coordination messages.

Collaborating with entities like the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), research institutions like Georgia Tech and Iowa State University, and other academic partners, these projects tackle diverse challenges. EPRI, for instance, is set to undertake multiple endeavors including the enhancement of control system cybersecurity leveraging artificial intelligence and the establishment of a zero-trust architecture for secure 4G LTE and 5G networks supporting electric power systems.

Moreover, universities such as New York University, Texas A&M University-Kingsville, and Kansas State University are delving into areas such as the development of integrated digital twins for security purposes, the exploration of post-quantum cryptography for authentication mechanisms, and the identification and mitigation of vulnerabilities within existing standards, respectively.

These initiatives underscore a concerted effort to fortify the energy sector against evolving cyber threats by fostering collaboration between government agencies, private entities, and academic institutions.
