Iranian Hackers Tried to Tip the 2024 Election by Leaking Stolen Trump Campaign Data to Biden's Team

In a shocking twist to the ongoing saga of foreign election interference, Iranian hackers attempted to sway the 2024 U.S. presidential election by targeting President Joe Biden's campaign with stolen information from Donald Trump's team, according to the FBI and other federal agencies. The cyberattack, which came to light recently, involved Iranian hackers sending unsolicited emails containing stolen Trump campaign material to individuals connected to Biden’s campaign in a clear effort to disrupt the election process.

Foreign Interference in Full Swing

Between late June and early July, the hackers reportedly sent emails to people linked to the Biden campaign. These emails contained excerpts from confidential Trump campaign data. Fortunately, there is no evidence that anyone responded to these emails, which prevented the hacked information from gaining traction and impacting the final months of the closely contested election.

In a coordinated move to influence the political landscape, the FBI, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI), and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) confirmed Iran’s efforts to weaken Trump’s candidacy. In contrast, Russia allegedly took the opposite approach, working to undermine Biden’s campaign in the months leading up to the election.

Biden’s Team Targeted by Phishing Attempts

While Biden’s team did not respond to the emails, campaign spokesperson Morgan Finkelstein commented on the incident, stating that they were unaware of any material being sent directly to the campaign. Some individuals, however, were targeted with what appeared to be spam or phishing attempts on their personal emails.

Finkelstein added that the Biden-Harris campaign cooperated fully with law enforcement as soon as they became aware of the foreign influence operation targeting their campaign. Meanwhile, Trump’s campaign took the opportunity to highlight Iran's actions, with spokesperson Karoline Leavitt claiming it was further proof of Iranian interference aimed at bolstering Biden and Kamala Harris.

Iranian Hacking Efforts Gain Attention

The news follows an earlier report by Microsoft, which had identified Iran’s interference in the 2024 election. Chris Krebs, former head of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, remarked that these latest revelations confirm Iran’s multi-pronged efforts to damage Trump’s campaign.

In a parallel development, a Senate Intelligence Committee hearing took place on the same day, where foreign threats to elections were discussed. Microsoft President Brad Smith characterized the situation as a battle of foreign interference: Russia siding with Harris, and Iran targeting Trump.

Trump Campaign Hacked

Adding fuel to the fire, the Trump campaign disclosed on August 10 that it had been hacked by Iranian actors who stole and distributed sensitive internal documents. The hackers leaked this information to at least three prominent news outlets: Politico, The New York Times, and The Washington Post. Despite receiving confidential materials, these outlets have not disclosed any details about the leaked data.

Politico reported that the emails it received on July 22 came from an anonymous AOL account under the name "Robert," who shared what appeared to be a research dossier on Ohio Sen. JD Vance, Trump’s running mate for the 2024 election.

Iran’s Denial

Unsurprisingly, Iranian officials denied the allegations, dismissing them as “fundamentally unfounded” and “wholly inadmissible.” A spokesperson from Iran's U.N. mission emphasized that Iran had no motive or intent to interfere in the U.S. election. Tehran challenged the U.S. government to provide transparent evidence of its claims if it genuinely sought the truth.

The Bigger Picture

Foreign interference in U.S. elections has long been a concern, with countries like Iran and Russia engaging in cyberattacks and influence campaigns to disrupt the democratic process. The latest revelations underscore the importance of safeguarding electoral integrity and highlight the persistent threats posed by foreign actors. As the 2024 election approaches, vigilance and cybersecurity remain paramount to ensure a fair and secure election outcome.
