A group of hackers going by the name of Anonymous has declared war on Russia in what appears to be a retaliative measure against the current Russian onslaught against multiple regions in the Black Sea country. Last Thursday, the gang announced it had taken aim at President Putin’s regime.

What has since happened is a series of Distributed Denial-of-Service attacks that have taken down a lot of government websites associated with the Kremlin. One of the targeted victims – the Ministry of Defense - remained inaccessible for a while after the gang not only hacked its database but also squeezed in pro-Ukraine content in hacked Russian TV channels. That content largely consists of traditional Ukrainian music and other national customs and symbols.

Since Anonymous appears to be an informal group of collaborators, linking them to the ongoing cyberattacks may turn out to be a difficult task. However, Russia Today openly blamed Anonymous for involving roughly 100 million devices to carry out a series of DDoS attacks against the television’s websites.

The actions carried out by the Anonymous cybergang come shortly after Ukraine suffered a severe wiper attack that rendered hundreds of computers inoperable.
