Network Solutions Users Credit and Debit Card Data Compromised

Networks Solutions, a registrar, web host and DNS service company, recently recognized an intrusion on their servers that could have compromised credit and debit card information for about 573,928 users.

During the ordinary course of business, Network Solutions identified unauthorized code on servers supporting some of their E-Commerce merchants' websites. Though this code was removed and the problem fixed, Network Solutions conducted an analysis with the assistance of outside experts and determined that the rogue code may have been used to transfer data on specific transactions for "approximately 4,343 of their more than 10,000 merchant websites."

Apparently the code had been present on the servers from March 12, 2009 until June 8, 2009. It would seem that Network Solutions is merely expressing the possibility that this information is compromised, however, as there is little to no certainty. They are also in the process of contacting those merchants and their customers about the issue.

Network Solutions comforted those affected by this tragedy that law enforcement had been contacted and a thorough investigation was under way. It remains to be seen whether the culprits will be brought to justice.

Washington Post are also reporting that "Network Solutions is offering to pay for 12 months of credit monitoring service through TransUnion for each consumer whose financial and personal data were compromised. " This may certainly help to heal the skepticism many customers may have in the future about dealing with Network Solutions.
