Microsoft Releases Temporary Windows Fix to Block Duqu Malware Exploit

duqu-malware-helpA temporary fix for the Duqu malware exploit has recently been offered by Microsoft until researchers find a definitive solution.

The backdoor Trojan known as PWS-Duqu (Duqu), was observed to be a malware based off of the previous Stuxnet Trojan that utilized specialized techniques to attack and control Windows PCs. The Stuxnet Trojan, if you remember, was a vulnerability exploit that ultimately allowed hackers to target Iran's nuclear plant last year.

Duqu can actually be traced back to a Win32k TrueType parsing engine component in Microsoft Windows. An experienced hacker armed with the Duqu malware could gain unadulterated access to a vulnerable PC where programs can be installed, data stolen or new user accounts created.

The recent advisory from Microsoft is essentially a temporary fix for those facing the Duqu exploit on their Windows machine. The advisory is designed to protect users from exploits until an actual patch is released next week on Tuesday.

As part of the Microsoft advisory, several workarounds have been suggested as a temporary fix for those encountering Duqu. Computer users savvy enough, or IT professionals, may utilize the suggested actions as a viable solution to denying the Duqu malware access to a Windows computer. Other computer users are strongly urged to keep their anti-virus or anti-spyware applications updated and avoid downloading suspicious files or attachments.
