Issue Mac Keyboard And Trackpad Not Working

Mac Keyboard And Trackpad Not Working

To encounter issues with both the keyboard and trackpad on a MacBook device could be a harrowing experience. However, not all hope is lost, as there are still a couple of options that might be able to help resolve the problem.

Reset the PRAM

By performing a PRAM (Parameter Ram) reset, users can address a variety of hardware issues and is a good starting point.

  1. Shut down the MacBook.
  2. Boot it back up but press the Command+Option+P+R keys on your keyboard as soon as possible (before the gray screen has appeared).
  3. Keep pressing the keys until you hear the reboot sound.
  4. Release the keys and wait for the system to start normally.

Restore the system to an earlier point

If the keyboard and trackpad issues are a recent development, then reverting your system to a previous point via Time Machine might be able to help. However, for this option to be available, users must have set Time Machine to back up their data to a storage device.

  1. Restart the MacBook.
  2. While the system is booting up, press Command+R to access the Recovery Tool.
  3. From the available options, choose 'Restore From Time Machine Backup.'

Delete .plist files

If the keyboard and trackpad issues appear intermittently, it may be a good idea to delete the Property List (plist) files associated with them. These files store user preferences when it comes to specific software services and products. By deleting them, you will reset the keyboard and trackpad to their factory settings. To avoid any unforeseen outcomes, it is for the best to have a backup of your Mac before you proceed.

  1. Open Finder.
  2. Press Command+Shift+G on your keyboard.
  3. Type or paste  ~/Library/Preferences/ in the new window.
  4. Locate and delete the following files:

com.apple.driver.AppleBluetoothMultitouch.trackpad.plist - Magic Trackpad

com.apple.driver.AppleBluetoothMultitouch.mouse.plist - Magic Mouse

com.apple.driver.AppleHIDMouse.plist - wired USB mouse

com.apple.AppleMultitouchTrackpad.plist

Com.apple.preference.trackpad.plist

  1. Restart the system.
