Apple Users Vulnerable to Remote Control by Sophisticated macOS Malware

A newly uncovered data-stealing malware specifically targets macOS users using a stealthy technique called Hidden Virtual Network Computing (hVNC). This sophisticated malware is available for purchase on the Dark Web, with a lifetime price tag of $60,000, and additional add-ons are offered. Virtual Network Computing (VNC) software is commonly utilized by IT teams to provide remote technical support, but hVNC acts as a deceptive counterpart. It can be integrated into threatening software, granting unauthorized access to systems without any user permission or awareness. This misleading approach makes it challenging for users to detect and defend against such attacks, posing a significant threat to macOS users' data security and privacy.

The hVNC, or The Hidden Virtual Network Computing malware, infiltrates Mac computers and executes full takeovers without the user's authorization. Additionally, it maintains persistence even after multiple system reboots.

The macOS hVNC has been available since April and has seen updates as recently as July 13. So far, security researchers have tested it on various macOS versions, ranging from 10 through 13.2, and is being offered by an active member of the Exploit forum known as RastaFarEye. This forum member has a notorious history of engaging in malicious activities and has previously developed a variant of hVNC targeting Windows OS, along with other attack tools.

This discovery comes in the wake of another troubling development in the macOS malware landscape, with the emergence of the ShadowVault malware in July. ShadowVault is another unsafe program exclusively targeting macOS devices, adding to the growing concern surrounding the security of Apple users.

As the macOS platform becomes an increasingly attractive target for cybercriminals, users must exercise caution, adopt stringent security practices, and keep their systems updated to safeguard against these evolving and sophisticated malware attacks.
