The SparkleBox Toolbar is a Potentially Unwanted Program that is closely associated with a variant of the infamous Conduit.com search engine, a low quality search engine linked to dozens of other PUPs. Despite its claims, the SparkleBox Toolbar is not designed to help you or provide useful services. Rather, the SparkleBox Toolbar is made to generate advertising revenue at the expense of computer users. Security researchers have received numerous complaints about the SparkleBox Toolbar's behavior and symptoms associated with this low quality PUP. Marketers may profit from the SparkleBox Toolbar in a variety of ways, which usually involve causing problems deliberately on the affected Web browser. The following are ways in which marketers may profit from installing the SparkleBox Toolbar on a computer:
- The SparkleBox Toolbar may take over the affected Web browser, forcing it to visit certain websites repeatedly or setting these websites as the affected Web browser's default search engine, homepage or new tab or window websites. The purpose of this is to drive traffic to certain websites associated with the SparkleBox Toolbar, increasing their page ranking and traffic stats, which usually translates directly into advertisement revenue and sponsorship deals.
- The SparkleBox Toolbar may also generate advertising revenue directly by displaying numerous advertisements on the affected Web browser. The SparkleBox Toolbar may be responsible for the appearance of numerous pop-up windows and bogus error messages on the affected Web browser. The SparkleBox Toolbar may also add other advertising revenue to affected Web browsers, including the addition of unwanted banner advertisements or sliding advertisements to websites being viewed on the affected Web browser or inserting in-text advertisements to text on unrelated Web pages.
- The SparkleBox Toolbar may compromise the computer users' privacy by gathering data about the affected Web browser and operating system settings. The SparkleBox Toolbar may track the computer user's online activity and browsing habits, potentially gaining access to valuable, private information. This data may then be used to deliver more advertisements to the affected Web browser. However, it may also be sold to a third party that could make illicit use of it. Data collected by the SparkleBox Toolbar may be used for multiple purposes, from marketing research to potentially harmful activities.
