Some rogue security programs that are quite similar to PC Security Pro are PC Security 2009 and PC Repair. PC Security Pro behaves in a manner that is typical of rogue security programs. PC Security Pro and Its Scam
Programs like PC Security Pro belong to a long-running scam that has been used to dupe inexperienced computer users for close to a decade. In fact, some variation of the rogue anti-malware scam has existed for generations. Rogue security programs are only a newer version of a scam that was once common among auto mechanics and snake oil salesmen. The PC Security Pro scam is simple to understand:
- First, PC Security Pro is installed onto the victim's computer through misleading tactics. There are several different ways a criminal can install PC Security Pro onto a computer. Some common ways in which this malicious attacker is installed include dropper Trojans, misleading marketing and disguised file downloads.
- Once PC Security Pro is installed onto the victim's computer, PC Security Pro displays several fake security alerts and error messages. PC Security Pro does this so that the victim will think that the computer is severely infected. PC Security Pro can also cause a number of problems on the infected computer, including frequent crashes, blocked access to files and folders, Internet connectivity problems and a general decrease in performance. It does all this in order to cause PC Security Pro's victim to panic.
- Taking advantage of the victim's panic, PC Security Pro poses as a legitimate anti-virus solution, so that the victim will buy PC Security Pro to remove the aforementioned problems However, since the problems are caused by PC Security Pro itself, buying a useless "full version" of this fake security program does absolutely nothing to return the infected computer to normal.
