ApptoU is a Potentially Unwanted Program. ApptoU is associated with InstalleRex-WebPick, a PUP bundle that is used to take advantage of computer users. There are several problems associated with ApptoU, frequently because ApptoU is more concerned with generating revenue at the expense of the computer user than in supplying some kind of functional service or interesting content. PC security researchers classify ApptoU as an adware infection because ApptoU is designed to expose computer users to a large number of advertisements when they use online search engines like Google, Yahoo or Bing. ApptoU may be installed as a Web browser extension, browser helper object, plug-in, add-on or other added component (typically taking the form of a Web browser toolbar). ApptoU may be installed on the most popular Web browsers on Windows, including Internet Explorer, Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox.

What to do When PUP Such as ApptoU Appears on Your PC

When ApptoU is installed, ApptoU also installs itself on Windows, making changes to the Windows Registry and other system settings. ApptoU will create an entry that can be removed in the Add or Remove Programs Control Panel. However, removing this entry may remove the ApptoU add-on but the advertisements may continue to appear on the affected Web browser. ApptoU may activate when computer users carry out an online search, adding its own advertising content to the search engine results. ApptoU may install other PUPs. ApptoU is closely related to other software from WebPicks Holdings such as InstalleRex, commonly used to generate profits by displaying advertisements on targets' PCs.

ApptoU is mostly active in the United States, with nearly 90% of affected computer users in this country. The remaining victims are spread around the world, many of which are in Australia. ApptoU may consume system resources, meaning that ApptoU may result in poor system performance, crashing or slowing down. Generally, a reliable security program that is fully up-to-date should be used to remove ApptoU completely from the affected computer and to prevent future, similar components from being installed.
