Windows is Stuck on 'Repairing Disk Errors'

Disk errors could be a source of a lot of stress. In most cases, they cause the Windows system to become unstable and run into critical issues that require a complete reboot frequently. Usually, these errors are caused by physical problems with the hard drive or SSD, bad sectors, or critical software incompatibilities. Under certain circumstances, the whole Windows system may get stuck or freeze during start-up on a screen displaying the following message - 'Repairing disk errors, This might take an hour to complete.' To try and fix these issues, apply the solutions outlined below.

Check if the System is Indeed Frozen

If you see the 'Repairing disk errors' message, you should give it chance, at least once, to see if it will resolve the issues. Leave the system turned on for a couple of hours or even overnight just to give it plenty of time. The automatic service may be able to deal with the errors and no further input from the user will be required.

Run CHKDSK in Safe Mode

  1. While pressing the Shift button on your keyboard, navigate to 'Power' and click on 'Restart.'
  2. From 'Choose an option screen,' pick 'Troubleshoot' followed by 'Advanced options.'
  3. Here, select 'Startup Settings' and then 'Restart.'
  4. Pick 'Safe Mode.'
  5. Once the system boots up, open an elevated Command Prompt window by typing cmd in the search field on the taskbar and pressing Ctrl+Shift+Enter.
  6. Type chkdsk /f C: and press Enter to execute the command.
  7. Wait for the process to complete and run it for your other Disk drives if needed.

Run the Repair-Volume Command

  1. Right-click the start menu and select the 'Windows PowerShell (Admin)' option.

  3. Type the following commands and press Enter after each one:

Repair-Volume drive-letter –OfflineScanAndFix

Repair-Volume drive-letter –SpotFix

  1. Wait for the process to finish and restart your computer.
