Where Are iMovie Files Saved?

The iMovie application is a video editing product native to the macOS environment. Although it is geared towards the consumer market and not for professionals specifically, it offers a competent package of features that can allow the creation of elaborate videos. The iMovie application was released back in 1999 originally and has been improved and streamlined continually, with each successive version. Since early 2017, the application was made free for all users.

While working in iMovie, the application will create autosaves of the project and the imported files periodically. While the feature is extremely reliable, users should still remember that it is based on time. So, if you have made a lot of progress in a short time, a sudden crash could set back your project significantly. So, just to be on the save side, it is a good habit to hit the Command+S keys on your keyboard to save the current projects. If you have added numerous video files to the active project that require a significant amount of resources, it could cause the application itself to become unstable, especially. But where are the iMovie project files saved on the Mac system?

Where are the iMovie files?

The iMovie application is similar to Photos in this regard. It creates its own library file and inside it is stored all of the user's projects and associated assets. The iMovie library file is usually placed in the Movies folder. Users can access it through Finder or by opening the 'Go' menu, then selecting 'Home,' and finally choosing 'Movies' from the available options.

To access the contents of the Library file, users either right-click it or hold the Option key on their keyboard while clicking on iMovie Libary. Doing so will show each saved project and its related assets. Keep in mind that tampering with the project files such as moving, renaming, or deleting them, could lead to some unintended consequences.
