Tips To Clean Your Mac and Improve Performance

If you have noticed that your Mac device is no longer running as smoothly as when it was brand new, then it could be time to do some cleaning.

Removing Old DMG Files

Usually, the Downloads folder will have quite a large number of leftover .dmg files that only take up space. This type of file is needed only during the installation of the respective application. To quickly free up space by deleting unnecessary .dmg files, try the following:

  1. Open Finder.
  2. Select the search field, type disk image and select 'Kind.'
  3. You will be presented with a list of all .dmg files present on your Mac. Select individual ones or get rid of all of them, according to your preferences.

Delete Large Files

To increase the available free space on your Mac system quickly, just delete any unused or seldomly used large files. To look for suitable candidates for removal, first open Finder. Then press Command + 2 on your keyboard. This will move you to the file list display mode. Now, press Command + J on your keyboard, click on 'Calculate all sizes,' and select 'Use as defaults.'

While in Finder, select the filter size and wait while sizes are being calculated. Afterward, you will be presented with a list of files and folders sorted by their size on the disk. Select the ones you don't particularly need and delete them.

Clear Caches and Logs

Many applications create their own cache and log files that might still be present on your Mac long after the application itself has been removed. To get rid of such junk files manually, users will need to access the hidden Library folder, and more specifically the ~/Library/Caches folder. To do so, open Finder, select the 'Go' menu, and then choose 'Go to Folder.' In the new window, paste ~/Library/Caches and hit 'Go.' Delete all unnecessary cache files.
