How To Resize an Image on Mac

Users who have switched to a Mac device recently might be wondering if there is an easy way to resize an image without having to download any third-party tools. Fortunately, Mac comes with a powerful built-in application named Preview that can come in handy in exactly such situations. Preview is the default macOS app that handles opening images and photos.

Resizing an image with Preview

  1. Open Finder on your Mac.
  2. Navigate to the location of the image you wish to manipulate and open it.
  3. The image should now be opened in Preview. If another app has been set as the default for this particular file type, right-click the image and choose to open it with Preview.
  4. Inside the Preview window, go to the Tools menu.
  5. Select 'Adjust size' from the available options.
  6. Now you can freely adjust the dimensions (height and width) of the opened image. To avoid any distortions or the image becoming skewed, enable the 'Scale Proportionally' option by checking the corresponding box.

Using Crop in Preview

Cropping an image allows you to focus the attention of the viewer on the important parts while avoiding any loss in quality. Users also skip the sometimes tedious moment of having to input the exact dimensions of the image in pixels manually. To access the Crop feature follow the steps:

  1. Open the image in Preview.
  2. Click and drag to select the desired area of the image. You can make adjustments by dragging the blue circles on the dotted line that highlights the current selection.
  3. Now, go to 'Tools' once more but this time select 'Crop.' An alternative method that could save you precious seconds is to use the keyboard shortcut Command + K.
